Who really wants a lot of variety in products?

An interesting article. are intermediate players in the supply chain driving product creation rather than the final customer?  is there evidence for this in other industries? Cars?

And what coust does this increased variety add to the supply chain.

Maybe it is a case of the scarce resource being able to drive up the price.
