Do It Yourself: Lowe’s creates house chassis fleet

Who is going to supply chassis for containers in the US? It’s an ongoing question I’ve been interested in for a while.  Ocean carriers used to do it; they owned about 30% of all chassis used to move shipping containers around.  Now they have opted out.  Well, not exactly; they formed a separate company called CCM to pool chassis and rent them to carriers.  but some companies are concerned about availability and road-ability, and could move to private fleets. New legislation for US ports under consideration

Port Strategy newsletter says two US senators introduced legislation to change the taxing of cargo to raise more money and to prevent cargo escaping the fees by coming through Canadian ports and coming in by rail.  The Harbor Maintenance Tax is currently not always collected, and is open to the run-around through Canada with rail entry.

Top 30 U.S. Ports: Economies of scale

Here is an article discussing various ports’ beliefs about why they rank where they do.  The list is instructive, though. LA and Long beach are still 1 and 2, and Oakland is 6th. I was surprised by that.
