Pasha Hawaii teams with Costco on chartering spree

Costco is another firm that has decided to figure out how to move its imports without help from the ocean shipping alliances. It is working with Pasha Hawaii to charter box ships. according to the article, Costco is now in a position to move 20% of imports using its own fleet.

That will give Costco a lot more freedom to choose routes and drop-off points. Perhaps they can choose landings where congestion is lower, or where they can get guaranteed times for drop-off.

It will be interesting to see what they do about containers. But it’s easy to buy containers made in China for the export trade. And it’s almost cheaper than returning the empties to China and the Far East.

Vessel charters get longer and more costly as carriers continue to hunt tonnage

Here are more examples of Non-Operating Owners chartering ships. And they are increasing in price. These carriers are outside the liner alliances, and allow the ships to move as they choose instead of following liner schedules. They can choose routes which avoid the major choke points in container handling we see now.

It’s another way to escape or try to escape the port congestion we see at major ports.

But there are increasingly signs that the congestion is spreading from the major ports such as LA and Long Beach to smaller ones such as Tacoma and even some East Coast US ports.

How do carriers escape the congestion then? At least with their own ships, not assigned to rotations, they can pick and choose. that flexibility may aid in winning contracts to shop goods.

Hanjin charter cut negotiations hobbled by hire arrears

Insight into the world of shipping, with a large shipping company delinquent in payments on charters to its shipowners.  It’s risky to own ships today, with rates so low and volatile.

In an e-mailed response to The Loadstar today, Hanjin Shipping would not be drawn on the renewed suggestions from a South Korean government official of a merger with Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), merely offering a “no comment”.
