New UK deepsea box port would be one of world’s largest tidal-powered schemes

Deep sea box ports are a good idea. They don’t take up valuable land space, and they don’t pollute regions where people live. They’re cheaper to build, and can be connected by rail and truck to land.

My colleague Alf Baird recommended these years ago.

This idea for one has an additional advantage– it will be powered by tidal flows, which can generate the electricity to run the port in a green fashion. Done properly, it might also power lots of homes or industrial spaces in the adjacent area.

I hope they get the investment funds and find some customers willing to commit.

Emissions soar at Port of Los Angeles in 2021

Last year the increase in emissions at the Port of Los Angeles was due to the extreme congestion at the port. ships were stacked up nearby, waiting to unload. And congestion in the terminals also created more truck waiting.

Fortunately, the particulates and lesser pollutants did not rise too much, and ramain=ed below the target levels.

We can expect improvement in 2022, because of the congestion relief we are seeing now.

Port of Houston mulls dwell measures to cope with record-breaking volumes

The Port of Houston is quickly becoming a major container import location. but some congestion is occurring and the dwell time of containers is increasing to close to 6 days, causing slowdowns in the yards. The port has adopted a plan to apply a dwell time fee for containers left beyond 6 days. It has not been actually enabled yet.

The port has also extended gate hours to allow drivers to access the yard over a longer period. We will see how many want to use the extended hours. At Los Angeles, the extended gate hours were not so successful, even with reduced charges for the extra time periods.
