China’s strategy links global supply chain investments by ‘one belt, one road’

Hercules Haralambides weighs in on the ‘one belt, one road’ (OBOR) initiative China is mounting.  It’s been unclear what it really is. But it would be natural for it to be strategic rather than specific to particular investments.  That’s his point.  Early in the game, we can expect it to be unclear to others what’s going on.   His message is to think geopolitically to understand how Chinese investment in transport and supply chain resources might evolve.

Hanjin charter cut negotiations hobbled by hire arrears

Insight into the world of shipping, with a large shipping company delinquent in payments on charters to its shipowners.  It’s risky to own ships today, with rates so low and volatile.

In an e-mailed response to The Loadstar today, Hanjin Shipping would not be drawn on the renewed suggestions from a South Korean government official of a merger with Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), merely offering a “no comment”.

Legendary i2 Founder Sanjiv Sidhu: What’s Next for Supply Chain?

Here is a great video featuring Sanjiv Sidhu, founder of i2, which was one of the firms that invented modern supply chain software.  I was in industry when they were at the fore.  He’s a very perceptive observer. His big thrust is now on agility, and he asks really good questions and tries to answer them with his new company, called o9.

His punch line, near the end, is fascinating. When things don’t go as expected, we humans often have, or can dig out, the knowledge about what went wrong. But it’s very hard to get that into systems, so the next plans can take more into account.  He sees this as a key area for the future of supply chain planning software.  I’d bet on his ideas.
