UPDATE – Felixstowe issues apology and rescinds container ban

Well, the media storm over the ban on receiving empty containers at Felixstowe got their attention at the port. Our earlier post on this subject explained the problem.

The apologies were for

“inconvenience”, “our service standards are not currently where we would like them to be”.

The port claims they are seeing a rush of container deliveries; perhaps it’s a presage of Brexit starting January 1, or simply a rush of winter orders. But this was entirely foreseeable. I guess their eye wasn’t on the ball for this crisis.

Imposing the ban was clearly a mistake, and a shock. It only took a couple of days for port management to realize they had screwed up the supply chains of everyone using the port.

LA and Long Beach ports could learn from Mister Rogers

Cooperation seems to go out the window in tough times. But California’s ports have a long history of cooperation on clean air. I hope they will resolve differences soon and putthis behind us.

A reduction in the clean air fee per TEU for zero emission trucks is a good idea. Let’s hope it is enacted soon, and that electric trucks start being used at the ports.

Shippers ‘held to ransom’ from blanked sailings and feeder problems

The constant stream of blanked sailings is predictably disrupting many supply chains and networks. Shippers are not getting the message, and it’s costing them extra, unplanned expense. That will percolate down to their customers as well, both in reliability and costs.

And shippers are complaining. No wonder!! The carriers are bringing it on. They are not considering ultimate customer needs.

Anyone wanting to create a disruption in maritime and hinterland supply chains will pay attention and try to do something about this.
